Kia Canada has reported its highest-ever monthly sales of electric vehicles (EVs) in May, marking a significant milestone in the company's push towards electrification. The automaker sold 1,899 EVs last month, representing a substantial 255% increase compared to May 2023.
Record-Setting Performance
The May sales figures were led by Kia's EV6 model, which accounted for 887 units sold. Following closely behind were the EV9 with 515 units and the Niro EV with 497 units. This impressive performance has contributed to a year-to-date total of 6,138 EVs sold, already reaching 78% of Kia Canada's total EV sales goal for 2023.
Provincial Sales Breakdown
The surge in EV sales was observed across several Canadian provinces. Quebec led the way with a 352% increase, followed by British Columbia (+117%), Ontario (+113%), Alberta (+130%), and New Brunswick (+283%). This widespread growth indicates a growing acceptance of electric vehicles across the country.
Comparison to Previous Years
Kia Canada's EV sales have been on an upward trajectory. In 2022, the company saw a 202% increase in EV sales compared to the previous year, setting a record with 7,883 units sold. The current year's performance suggests that this record is likely to be surpassed, with nearly 80% of last year's total already achieved by May.
Impact on Total Sales
Electric vehicles are playing an increasingly important role in Kia Canada's overall sales strategy. In May, EVs accounted for 23% of the company's total vehicle sales, highlighting the growing consumer interest in electric mobility.

Elias El-Achhab, Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of Kia Canada, commented on the sales results: "The continuous growth of our EV sales is demonstrating that the shift to a more sustainable future is indeed happening.
